It is subfield of psychology focused on the assessment of individuals who are undergoing some form of immigration process.  There are many types of immigration psychological evaluations and each individual case is different.  Not all immigration cases require a psychological evaluation.  The psychological evaluation is conducted when the immigration attorney believes it is needed for a particular case.

The immigration psychologist performs an evaluation designed to answer the specific psycho-legal questions related to a particular case.  The immigration psychologist must have a working knowledge of the standards related to a particular immigration case in order to meet the needs of that case.  In other words, the immigration psychologist must know how to answer the questions the particular immigration case poses.

What are some types of immigration psychological evaluations?

There are multiple types of immigration psychological evaluations.  Each evaluation is designed to answer the specific psycho-legal questions of the case.  Immigration psychological evaluations are done for cases related to Hardship Waivers, VAWA , asylum , U Visa, T Visa, and Citizenship Examination waiver (N-648).

What is a psychological evaluation for T Visa or trafficking Visa?

A psychological evaluation for a T Visa (trafficking) is a psychological assessment that is conducted as part of the process of seeking a T Visa.  A T Visa is available to individuals who are victims of human trafficking.

The purpose of a psychological evaluation for a T Visa is to assess the psychological impact of the trafficking on the individual seeking the T Visa. This may include documenting the psychological symptoms and difficulties experienced by the individual as a result of the trafficking, as well as the potential long-term effects of these experiences on the individual’s mental health and well-being.

What is a psychological evaluation for U Visa?

A psychological evaluation for a U Visa is a psychological assessment that is conducted as part of the process for seeking a U Visa. A U Visa is available to individuals who are victims of certain crimes and who have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse as a result of the crime and who have been helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime.

The purpose of a psychological evaluation for a U Visa is to assess the psychological impact of the crime and abuse on the individual seeking the U Visa. This may include documenting the psychological symptoms and difficulties experienced by the individual as a result of the crime and abuse, as well as the potential long-term effects of these experiences on the individual’s mental health and well-being. 

What is an immigration psychological evaluation for Citizenship Examination waiver (N-648)?

Citizenship Examination waiver (N-648) is a medical certification for disability exemption.  The N-648 is also known as an application for exemption from the citizenship test. If you are seeking a waiver for the citizenship examination due to a mental disability, a psychologist can conduct an unbiased and objective assessment to establish the nature and extent of the disability.  If there is sufficient impairment, the immigration psychologist can complete a medical certification stating that you have a mental disability that prevents you from taking the examination. The medical certification should include information about the nature and extent of your disability, and how it affects your ability to take the examination.

In order to be considered for the exemption from the citizenship test, you will need to provide this medical certification (N-648) along with any additional documentation or information that may be requested by the immigration authorities. It is important to note that the decision to grant a waiver is at the discretion of the immigration authorities.
